This page is now a recap or what it was like before, during and after Annika Sorenstam's
historic competitive performance at the 2003 PGA Colonial Tournament in Ft. Worth, Texas.

GO - Annika - GO, that's the chant from Penny Pulz GOLF.  Annika is stepping up to the plate of competition and when a player steps up, fans need to cheer.  I'll be at the Colonial to cheer on Annika.  How about coming with me?

The hype began at the beginning of the LPGA season and grew to a frenzy by May 22!

Go .  .  Annika  .  . GO               May 22 - 25, 2003          Bank of America Colonial

Gathering fans for the annika Gallery At Colonial

Rally Call ! ! !  to all Annika and LPGA fans. Let's gather at Annika's first hole Thursday May 22. at the Colonial PGA Tournament in Fort Worth Texas

How exciting if we could rally retired LPGA tour mates my new family of friends from the LPGA teaching division, ladies college team players, members of LPGA girls golf clubs, my beloved girl scout golfers, and all women and men who want to support a gutsy competitor who will stretch her competitive internal drive to the max. Don't you want to be there to see whether Annika will be a cool cucumber or a squished tomato.

Fans are the magical elixir to keep your confidence in the now. When I won my first tournament, the Corning Classic, I was a young gal whose heart was pumping out of my chest which resulted in hooked golf shots. It was the fans magic elixir that kept me quiet to do what I had trained to do since I was a thirteen year old junior golfer. And the Corning fans continue the tradition as they celebrate their 25th anniversary this year the same week as we will be in Fort Worth.

Click on the Go !.. Annika. .Go!. forum to register and let us hear from you so we can dialogue and come up with some great fun plans for the magic elixir on the course and after Annika's round, post game analysis questions and conversation.

The MEDIA hype - spurred on gender issues spoken by PGA Pro's!!!

  • I will be at the Bank of America Colonial PGA Tournament supporting an superb athlete; world class golfer Annika Sorenstam.  My friends and I will also have the great opportunity to watch many of the top golfers in the world.  But I will be cheering loudly for Annika!  The beehive has been struck and the buzzing is massive.  I remain steadfast, golf is without gender.  It is about golf and those who play the sport with exquisite physical and mental abilities.  Read comments in the news today!  Gary McCord "This can only help golf, the LPGA and PGA. Every person who has an opinion on gender will be watching. This is like Halley's Comet doing a drive-by every 76 years. You won't get to see it again for some time."

It's going to be great sports competition and the great LPGA Champion, Annika, putting her skill to test.  Get out there and read the coverage!

  • Highlights -- Day 1, Bank of America Colonial PGA Tournament.

Go Annika! 71 for Round One at the Colonial in Fort Worth. Impressive! How much of a buzz was happenin'. Pia Nilsson, the stoic Swede who is friend and coach to Annika, chatted with me a few minutes before Annika's tee off. Her eyes were as big as saucers and a grin that wouldn't quit. We asked her for a tip for watching the action to encourage Annika --. 'breathe deeply and focus our thoughts on staying in the moment".  We had fun with the tip and whipped up the fans with the breath and focus drill.

How exciting was it for me to watch the first round of another page to Women's Golf history?  I forgot my favorite fold up chair by the green on the third hole of play because I had to battle my way through the crowd  to my next position to see Annika hit that ball.

What else was different about this men's PGA tournament? The media interviewed me, LPGA retired tour player - heavy emphasis on the L before the PGA - for a story line at the Colonial...

  • Christine Brennan, USAToday columnist, is consistently a positive voice for women's sports and especially golf.  Read her column today.  She is priceless.  Thanks Christine for all your column's which raise the consciousness of the struggle the LPGA and women's golf still fight in this male dominated arena.

  • Highlights -- Day 2, Bank of America Colonial PGA Tournament.

Annika misses cut.  Even Cowgirls cry . . . a Fort Worth lady spectator spoke quietly as she watched Annika at eighteenth on Friday. I understood the spirit of that compliment the Texan had given Annika after my visit on Sunday afternoon at The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth.  A cowgirl loves what she does, pursues her dream with confidence, determination; is strong in character and passion and does it with a bit of zip in the personality!

On the first hole at Annika’s tee-off there were 40,000 people lining the fairway from tee to green. The buzz of anticipation was electrifying to our senses.

Binoculars and step stools were a must for the avid Annika fan. Cigars were the standard stink permeating the air where the men gathered together.

Fort Worth fans understood Annika’s attempt to climb the Mt. Everest of golf. ‘We love you Annika’ a deep masculine voice called out as her struggles were being felt during the last few holes.  Gender, distance; those controversies had been transcended.

The Press Room, “ I want to play on the weekend”, said Annika. The pitch of her voice resonated the deep longing in her competitive heart. “Will you play in another PGA event?” the reporter asked. “ No.” she answered.   Hummmph  . . . Let’s ask her in about six months.

Comments from my newletter 6-21-2003; reflecting on Annika's performance

Since attending the ‘Annika week in Fort Worth, I just got to thinkin’ about mental golf. Annika had to discipline herself to keep her focus on her game plan. Tough stuff considering there were over 600 media gawking at her every move. And Annika is a seasoned professional in the game of tension.

Equally as tuff though, for the weekend golfer, is to discipline the mind to keep the focus on simple thoughts making it possible to create decent golf shots. Weekend golfers rarely achieve their lofty goals so mental tinkering occurs, which creates mental chaos. And oops . . . there goes the score.

No, Annika didn’t make the cut. It wasn’t due to poor mental golf or a golf swing that was mechanically unsound. Being the professional golf tour player that she is, still Annika had never experienced such pressure in her life.  As Albert Einstein wrote, “Learning is experience. Everything else is just information.”

  • And has she even entertained the chance to win the Colonial?

"I dream about it, of course," she said. "You've got to have high expectations when you visualize anything, and you have to have fun with it, too. My goals are on the LPGA. That's where I want to go win tournaments. . . . I want to test myself. It's going to be a learning experience for me, a learning week, and I'm never going to forget it."   Annika Sorenstam, The Washington Post 5-13-2003

  • "I can't imagine there could be any more pressure on anyone," said Kim Kelleher, publisher of Golf for Women magazine. "To be able to perform under that is truly remarkable. I'll be nervous just watching her. But she's a very impressive person with the whole package -- attractive, well-spoken and so talented. She'll be fine."The Washington Post 5-13-2003

  • "It's been a lot of pressure and a lot of emotion," Sorenstam said at a news conference during which she choked back tears several times. "I want to come back tomorrow. I gave it everything I had. I loved the golf course. I tested myself, and I have a lot to be proud of. To be part of something like this is something I'll never forget." The Washington Post 5-24-2003

Don't tell me about what you know, tell me about your experience!
