2003 LPGA Safeway PING Tournament

Another gorgeous day in the winter of 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona; it's the second tournament of the 2003 LPGA season which means all the players are here for the competition.  Along with the players in attendance is the Girl Scouts of Arizona Cactus-Pine Council!

On Thursday, March 23rd, we gathered at the Moon Valley Country Club entrance and prepared for an inside tour of the LPGA tournament.  Penny Pulz begins with an intro to professional sports, what to expect and what we will see.

We walked to the practice range and saw golf pro's hitting balls on the range; we saw where their clubs are repaired during the week and took a picture in front of the training facility that provides strength training equipment and physical therapy personnel.  We learned that this facility travels with the golfers at all the tournament locations because the women continue to train for strong bodies and stay in top athletic condition.

We walked passed the locker area for the pro's and saw golfers coming and going.  Penny took us toward a double-door entrance and stopped to ask us to stay together and use our indoor voices because we were going to tour the official LPGA Media Center.  We saw reporters from all over the world; everyone with laptop computers, clocks showing time from all over the world with newspapers and magazines everywhere.  We were given programs and media copy stories.  The staff were so very happy to see us and even  took us into the private area called the interview room.  This is where the pro golfers sit when they are interviewed on television and where press conferences are conducted.  It was very cool, we had our picture taken there too!

Our tour went to the tournament scoreboard, the practice putting green and then we went to the 9th tee area.  All the golfers had finished in this area; as we stood on the tee box, Penny coached us to pretend to be pro's hitting our golf balls down the fairway.  We stood in the starters tent where the pro's are introduced at the beginning of their round of competition.

As the tour was ending, we watched the 18th green as the golfers ended their round of golf and took our group picture one more time.  As the golfers finished we were all able to get autographs; Patty Sheehan, Christy Kerr, Grace Park and more.  We went back to the practice putting area and watched for more pro's.  Annika Sorenstam was giving an interview and putting.  When she finished she came over to us and signed an autograph for each one of us.  We were very excited and gave her a cheer to encourage her competition at the Colonial PGA tournament in May!!

It was a great combo -- the Girl Scouts and the LPGA!

2002 LPGA PING BannerHealth Tournament

Girl Scouts of  Arizona Cactus-Pine Council toured the 2002 PING HealthBanner LPGA Tournament at Moon Valley Country Club, Phoenix, Arizona.  On the first day of official tournament play, Thursday, March 14, a group of 20 Girl Scouts observed a professional sports event up close and personal with Penny Pulz, 2 time LPGA Champion, as their tour guide.

First the girls met at 4:00 in the afternoon as tournament play was wrapping up.  The scouts were well represented by the council's "cookie VW Bug", we had fun taking pictures.  The guided tour began with Penny's introduction to just what the LPGA is and what the tour does; how it is an international representation of the most talented women in golf throughout the world.

As we began, Val Skinner stopped by with a big hello and welcome.  Val talked to the young Girl Scouts and signed an autograph or two.  The Media Room was the first stop with a gracious introduction by the LPGA communications staff.  Our group walked out to the driving rang passed the training trailer, Lorie Kane stopped with her infectious smile and greeted our Girl Scout golfer.  Lorie was in her exercise t-shirt and shorts but took the time to say a warm and sweet hello and welcome.

The driving range was a quiet area late in the afternoon but we took time to sit on the bleachers and answer questions about professional women golfers.  We walked back into the golf course area to the tournament scoreboard and talked with the volunteers recording the scores.  Lot's of questions here and we spied who was leading and what the cut might be on Friday afternoon.

At the first tee, a mock set-up was quickly  created to explain player introductions and tee off's during tournament.

We were adjacent to the 9th green.  While using only our audio skills, no verbal skills here, we approached the side of the green and watch Nancy Lopez pitch onto the green and putt.  We observed several pairings and learned the appropriate golfers clap for a putt well done.  One of our girls ran to successfully get Nancy's autograph as Nancy finished her round.

Our last stop was by the 18th green.  Here we watched Chris Johnson sink a birdie putt and we all enthusiastically gave Chris a clap and cheer and received from
Chris a big wave and smile of thank you.  A final picture of our Girl Scout group was taken on this beautiful March afternoon in Arizona at the Ping BannerHealth LPGA Golf Tournament.  We will be back again next year!
