Put your game where your mouth is!
x Your Golf Game THEORY  vs Your ‘Now’ Golf Game PERFORMANCE.

We all need to ask the big picture question a couple of times a year  -- “Is my golf game in good shape”?  When I forget to ask this question, I inevitably lose the reality of what shape my overall game is really in.

I break my question down into 5 mini areas of my game using stats and mental condition stats to back up my answers. My subjects are:

  1. putting,
  2. chipping, pitching, bunker
  3. full swing
  4. mental management
  5. golf course management

A quick story about my golf theory verses my ‘now’ golf game.
Mini subject, putting.  I have been goofing around with a long putter and a belly putter for about a year and a half. I had fallen in love with the theory that less moving parts would make putting simpler. I wanted to practice my putting less and still keep it in shape when I played about once every couple of months and this theory supported that desire. I settled on the long putter and just loved it. No backache. But then, well, “oh sure I miss a few putts, hey, who doesn’t anyway” became my internal conversation.

A quick reality inventory of just how many missed putts per round and what type of misses would have quickly showed me trouble brewing in my beloved putting theory land. I know from experience that what is perfect on paper and theory is not necessarily perfect for me. But listen up; “I wanted this theory to work, damn it.”

Fast forward to a golf tournament. I love competition because it shows you exactly what you know and what you don’t know about your golf game. After the first 9 holes of the competition, I recognized unequivocally that I knew crap about this long putter and it did not work for me. Missed putts were 'in-my-face' reality. I have retired the long putter, trashed the fantasy theory and am dutifully humbled to bring out all my short putter practice regimens and I am now spending the time to keep my putting game sharp.

I share this story so that you will examine your favorite ideas, i.e.; theories, on your golf game.  Put them to the test through the big picture question and answer plan or through a brutally honest competitive day on the links. I promise you, it certainly is easier on the heart to ask the big picture questions a couple of times a year than to show your ass in competition.  back to top
