POSTURE – or as my junior golfers taught me to say, Ready Position. The juniors have shaped-up my golf lingo. They like the words ‘Ready position’ for posture. Me too. Why? Think about it – Ready . . . Set . . . Go! With these words, we easily can feel in our bodies a sense of alertness; we can recall a time of anticipation as we awaited the sound of Goooo !
Now, for my story . . . . The other day, my friend Bob and I were cruisin’ along the fairways having a game of golf. I was down in the dumper and told him he was dragging an old turtle along. He just laughed at me and listened on as the ‘whoe is me’ monologue whined on. Now, you must understand, my golf game was ugly; right, thin or pull left. No feel of what was going on and a disinterest for the game ensued. Of course none of you will relate to having a bad day on the course. On the back nine we decided a bet of $5 was in order. Ah ha, I love competition. It makes me perk up and I’m alert to the myriad of little details required to hit a decent golf shot. I began to check my posture and swing points. Lo and behold, the posture of my ready position was in sag mode. No wonder I was hitting weak toe right shots. I began to feel where my body was in ready position and to check into my mental state to become more involved in the ‘alive anticipatory alertness state’, rather than my ‘dumper’ state. It didn’t hurt that I won the first hole either. The game was on and I was back as a spirited golfer. My overall game strengthened and I was able to continue to make little adjustments to improve my ball striking. The back nine was fun. As golfers, we must continue for life to find the ‘happy’ in each golf shot. The more we engage with golf, the more we are gifted back with great golf shots that make us feel groovy inside. Hitting with alertness -- results?

My teaching station is at Palm Valley Golf Club, Goodyear, Arizona. I can now claim bragging rights of 'sunny Arizona'. As it's now cold in my Michigan digs, it is not baking here in Arizona.
