 Tempo--Timing

During the past winter 2004, I was blessed to spend a few days at the David Leadbetter Academy in Orlando, Florida.  It was my fortune to be able to observe David working with LPGA tour player, Kristal Parker-Manzo. I then became the eyes and ears for David here on the West coast for Kristal’s training.

The majority of tour players do not respond with straight golf shots when trained in the mechanics of swing path shape. Inside, outside, to upright etc, are not going to get a swing correction that will stick in competition. If you think too much about the specifics of your shape, you will lose the flow of the swing and your sense of direction to target.

Here are a couple of keys from my time observing David working with Kristal that will help
you work on your swing path from a tempo, timing mode that can result in a strongly struck golf shot zipping to the flag.

Tempo/Rhythm -- Timing  … What is the difference?

Tempo:
The overall rate of pace of your golf swing.
Timing: How all the parts of your swing sequence to each other, good and bad.

When using my GOLF VIDEO PRO equipment, I put a couple of your golf swings on the screen and play them in slow motion.  The playback reveals how closely .. or not so closely, the two swings sequence to each other. Most amateurs have very wide sequential changes from golf swing to golf swing.

Tour players are super close to sequential sameness. Each swing is nearly identical in timing to their last swing. Good players spend quality practice time  working on tempo and timing sameness.

During your next range session, spend time on hitting balls with a focus on tempo and timing. You will be amazed at how well your ball striking will improve without changing your shape.

Change of Seasons - fall arrives in Michigan, Where in the World is Penny?
x

Pumpkin patches have sprung up in Michigan along with fall colored leaves on the trees, I have journeyed across country and have begun to dig into my Arizona golf mates!  Has the season changed in Arizona? Only by the most subtle standard are changes occurring here in Phoenix; cool mornings with lovely evening for walking my pug, Daphne. In comparison to Saginaw, Michigan, I have some days yet to adjust to much higher daily temperatures with my wide brimmed hats.  My Arizona teaching station is open; I'm ready for action.
