TEMPO--TIMING  – The key To Consistency for your golf swing!

setup alignment

Tempo:    The overall rate of pace of your golf swing.

Haven’t you felt like this, ‘Wow, if I swing any faster, my shoelaces are going to rip out of my shoes.” I call that the “scared-eee cat swing’. Why? Here’s why.  The faster you swing, the less you feel. Hit it and rip it is followed by the ‘oh darn, I swung too fast’ excuse.

Today’s young guns have similar swing shapes but also have large variations in their timing and tempo. Individual tempo is unique to each one of us. I know I get buzzin’ too fast. How about you?

Watch the tele’ for Meg Mallon and Stuart Cink, Mr and Ms Smooth. Watch too Marissa Baena and Tiger Woods for raw speed. Observe any of your favorite LPGA, PGA stars for their unique tempo. I bet you can pick out your golfing friends from quite a distance just from the swing shape and tempo of their swing.

Which tempo is right for you? The swing tempo that suits your unique pace to life.

Timing:    How all the parts of your swing sequence to each other, good and bad.

Examples, Solutions

Haven’t you felt like this, “Wow, my downswing was waaaaay too fast”?

This assumption of your swing error is too vague to make an appropriate swing adjustment. or correction.  Your error correction will most likely be a change in your tempo; slowdown the whole downswing, i.e. your tempo; instead of changing the sequence within the tempo of your golf swing, i.e., your timing.

The following examples of timing will provide you with keys to change your sequence.

  • My body was zoomin’ and my club was crawlin’.
Solution: Either slow the leg pace or speed up the arm pace.

  • I have no zip or wrist snap through  the ball.
Solution: Loosen your hands on club and quicken wristy, flicky snap with a slower body rotation through impact.

When using my GOLF VIDEO PRO equipment, I put a couple of your golf swings on the screen and play them in slow motion.  The playback reveals how closely .. or not so closely, the two swings sequence to each other. Most amateurs have very wide sequential changes from golf swing to golf swing.

Tour players are super close to sequential sameness. Each swing is nearly identical in timing to their last swing. Good players spend quality practice time  working
on tempo and timing sameness.

During your next range session, spend time on hitting balls with a focus on
tempo and timing. You will be amazed at how well your ball striking will
improve without changing your shape.
